Forest distrct as it had a separate name and was spatially distinct, it could have been a locality (inhabited forest district) or a settlement unit (uninhabited, deserted forest district). This second category was dominant. As an inhabited forest district (next to the village, town, farm, etc.), it is mentioned in the registers concerning the eastern provinces of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The number of residents usually did not exceed a dozen or so people. Currently, a forest district is a type of physiographic object in the "Other physiographic object" class of objects in the State Register of Geographical Names.The basic criterion of distinguishing forest district from other localities or settlement units from the perspective of its functionality is its relation to the organization of forestry or agricultural production. Individual parts of forest or agricultural areas for a better understanding of space received their own names. It also did not exclude the forest settlement form the process of settling and thus the transformation to the kind of locality. The morphological distinctiveness of forest districts due to the nature of natural boundaries (swamps, glades, etc.) is fuzzy. From the legal point of view, the status of the forest district is rather unclear because this term was also used in relation to various types of forest settlements or parts of forests such as "bór" or "ostęp".
