The typology and taxonomy of territorial units in Lithuanian land in the Middle Ages was inconsistent and provoked heated discussion among historians. The terms are often interchangable and fluid, e.g. land, wolost. For instance, until the second half of the 15th c. the baillifs (pl. Starosta) od Drohiczyn and Biels lands were called "wojewoda", while after the 15th c. the governors in Poldlachia were called "Starosta". Only after the 16th c. a relatively stable administrative system was established. It included: voividships and districts (województwa, powiaty). Broadly speaking, the voidoships replaced the principalities and lands, while districts replaced the vicegerencies/bailiwicks and wolosts. (English)

Typologia i nazewnictwo jednostek terytorialnych ziem litewskich w średniowieczu były niekonsekwentne i są przedmiotem dyskusji wśród historyków. Występuję duża zmienność oraz wymienność określeń ich typów: np. ziemia, wołość. Np. do II połowy wieku XV starostowie związani z ziemią drohicką i bielską nazywani byli wojewodami, zaś od połowy XV w. namiestnicy na Podlasiu określani byli mianem starostów. Dopiero w XVI w. ukształtował się względnie stabilny terytorialny system administracyjny oparty o podział na województwa oraz powiaty. Ujmując rzecz bardzo generalnie województwa zastąpiły dawne księstwa i ziemie, zaś powiaty – dawne namiestnictwa-starostwa i wołości. (Polish)
