Przynamniej do XIII w. gród stanowił centralną i zwykle jedyną uchwytną źródłowo część miasta, więc dla tego okresu może być z nim utożsamiany; po lokacji stawał się jednym z obiektów w mieście, zwykle peryferyjnym, niejednokrotnie zamienianym w zamek. (Polish)

Grody są charakterystyczne przede wszystkim dla pełnego średniowiecza, gdy językiem źródeł była łacina - a w niej nie wykształcił się w ogóle termin odpowiadający tej jednostce osadniczej. Określano ją więc za pomocą pojęć o odmiennym, względnie podobnym znaczeniu, jak miasto (civitas), zamek (arx, castrum). Z kolei w późniejszych źródłach niemieckich odpowiadał mu termin Burg, oznaczający zarówno gród, jak również zamek. W literaturze przedmiotu gród jest traktowany jako zjawisko specyficznie słowiańskie. (Polish)

Gords are characteristic mostly for the High Middle Ages, when documents were written in Latin, despite the fact that Latin does not know a proper notion for this kind of settlement unit. Expressions with a different, relatively similar, meaning had been used to describe the gord, i.e. a city (lat civitas), or a castle (lat arx, castrum). In younger historical German sources “gród” was called Burg, the expression meaning both a gord and a castle. Researchers consider “gord” as an endemic and specifically Slavic phenomenon. (English)

At least untill the 13th century, a gord was a central and usually the only element of a city or town indicated in written historical sources, which is why these may be considered as identical for this period; after location, the gord became one of many facilities in a city or a town, usually situated on peripheries, sometimes converted into a castle.
